The Nostalgia Hall of Fame

Nostalgia in Hall of Fame form

  • The Nostalgia HOF

There are halls of fames for everything nowadays. You got the obvious ones: Rock & Roll HOF, Baseball HOF. You have the ones no one seem's to care about like The Rockabilly Hall of Fame, or the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame (Actually exists). But there's not one Hall of Fame that everyone cares about. There are non-sports fans that could care less who's getting in the Baseball or Football Halls of Fame. There are people that aren't into current entertainment that don't care about who's on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But the one Hall of Fame we all could relate to is missing. The Nostalgia Hall of Fame. Things change from childhood to adulthood, but there are always things that remind us of childhood or our teenage lives. We might see an old book in the library and think "Hey, I remember reading that book in 5th grade." There might be an old toy at a yard sale or on the E-bay that reminds us how we played with it non-stop a long, long time ago. So why is there no Hall of Fame for all the old stuff we like? Well now there is. Kinda. I'm not ambitious enough to build a giant building and officially induct things and give them plaques and crap. But as a blogger I can do my duty. After all, in 10 or 20 years when the new cool thing on the internet is something totally different, blogging will be nostalgic. There are several categories that something can get inducted for including: Toys, Movies, Cartoons, TV Shows, Sports, Music, Video games, Quotes and more. Nostalgia will be inducted in an at least 10 years old basis, so anything before 1998 is fair game.

Ernest Goes To Camp

Ernest Goes To Camp
Hall of Fame Category: Movies (Non-Animated)

While its technically not the original Ernest movie (The first one was “Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam” but lets not talk about that) many people consider it to be the original. Sure, the Ernest P. Worrell character got started in a plethora of commercials, mostly for dairy products. But going to camp is what made Ernest popular in the first place. Jim Varney took his Ernest character on to several other movies. Some good (Ernest Goes To Jail, Ernest Scared Stupid), some bad (Ernest Goes To Africa, Ernest in the Army). It was, however, quite impressive that the bad guy in EGTC couldn’t kill Ernest with several shots from a rifle, or maybe Ernest just can’t be killed by bullets. Nonetheless, with Jim Varney’s death in 2000, we never got to see the 2001 scheduled release of “Ernest the Pirate” which I’m sure would have been gold. But one good thing about Jim Varney’s death, is that he didn’t get to the washed up, desperate for cash stage of his life where “Ernest Goes Hardcore” would have sounded like a good idea. Know what I mean, Vern?

Short Circuit

Short Circuit
Hall of Fame Category: Movies (Non-Animated)
Long before people were seriously scared of robots and computers becoming self aware, one did, Number 5. Short Circuit was for robot nerds what E.T. was for sci-fi geeks. The best part of this movie is that on the box it looked like a kids movie. “Oh, a cute little robot becomes friends with a girl, cool.” But the movie itself was laced with swearing, drug & sexual references and a robot checking out a naked babe. It also may have been the originator of computer geek pick up lines “Attractive! Nice Software.” Needless to say, Number 5 beat C3PO, R2D2, Asimo, and the T-1000 as the cutest robot ever (even though he looked like a big metal grasshopper). To prove its nostalgia, there’s a remake of Short Circuit coming out in ‘08 or ‘09. If someone remade you, you’re nostalgic, that’s the rule of thumb. Sadly, like all remakes, its more than likely gonna suck, hard. But for the Pete of Sake, to all kids of the 80’s, everyone who saw Short Circuit, and to nostalgists everywhere, Number 5 is alive.
