There are only a handful of quotes that just about everyone knows where they’re from. Even big box office money makers don’t have quotes that everyone remembers. But “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” defies time. It debuted in Jaws in 1975, and has been quoted by people ever since. Another thing it has over other quotes like “E.T. phone home,” and “Wax on, wax off” is it’s infinite ironic uses. Besides a couple guys in a boat fishing and reeling in a large bass and one saying “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” its got a bazillion other uses. Like, for example, you go to your mom’s for Thanksgiving and she makes a bit too much gravy you could say “You’re gonna need a bigger gravy boat.” Or if your fat friend is trying to wear an old winter jacket you could say “You’re gonna need a bigger coat.” I wouldn’t be surprised if some trench diggers from the middle ages said “You’re gonna need a bigger moat” when they were building some defense for their king’s castle. The point is, like the movie it is from, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” is ageless, awesome, and most of all, nostalgic.
