These dudes rocked. You could classify it as an alcohol company marketing to a younger audience. After all, everyone loves talking frogs. Look at Kermit. I’ll drink what ever he’s selling. The Warner Brothers frog. Well, he was kinda lame. The budweiser frogs easily beat out the Clydesdales as the best animal beer mascot. Those horses would just prance around all flamboyently. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I’m just saying that those horses got their drafts from the other side of the bar, if ya know what I’m sayin’. But those frogs, they didn’t even have to speak an entire word of script and they rocked ass. Until those damn chameleons hired the ferret hitman, it all when down a hill from there.

One of the most original game shows ever? Me thinks so. Legends of the Hidden Temple had one thing no other game show had. It had the first, and probably the only, monolith co-host, Olmec. It was great because the show taught kids what they really needed to know, fictionalized history. And it had artifacts. Kids love artifacts. They’re art, they’re facts, and I liked ‘em. Besides, history is never fun unless there’s a maze-like temple involved and a monkey statue to assemble.

While its technically not the original Ernest movie (The first one was “Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam” but lets not talk about that) many people consider it to be the original. Sure, the Ernest P. Worrell character got started in a plethora of commercials, mostly for dairy products. But going to camp is what made Ernest popular in the first place. Jim Varney took his Ernest character on to several other movies. Some good (Ernest Goes To Jail, Ernest Scared Stupid), some bad (Ernest Goes To Africa, Ernest in the Army). It was, however, quite impressive that the bad guy in EGTC couldn’t kill Ernest with several shots from a rifle, or maybe Ernest just can’t be killed by bullets. Nonetheless, with Jim Varney’s death in 2000, we never got to see the 2001 scheduled release of “Ernest the Pirate” which I’m sure would have been gold. But one good thing about Jim Varney’s death, is that he didn’t get to the washed up, desperate for cash stage of his life where “Ernest Goes Hardcore” would have sounded like a good idea. Know what I mean, Vern?

Remember the first time you saw a slap bracelet? You were probably in 4th or 5th grade and someone brought in something that looked like a ruler covered in leopard print fabric. There was a big crowd around that kid that day wasn’t there? You walked into the crowd and said “Gee golly, Bobby, what’s that swell new toy you get there fellow?” (That’s how I talked in the early 90′s anyway) You reached out to touch it, Bobby slapped it against your wrist and it scared the bejesus out of you as it coiled around your wrist like a tiny boa constrictor. Then everyone laughed at you for soiling yourself in the middle of the classroom. Nonetheless, you went to your local toy store after school that day and bought like 10 of them. The next day you played with them throughout math class and that is why you still have a problem with algebra to this day. There was a huge teacher rebelion against slap bracelets, if teachers caught you with them, you could count on not getting them back. Then there was a big fight and someone called the teacher a doodie head and feelings were hurt. Speaking of hurt, snap bracelets had their own injury toll. Many kids actually got hurt by these little fabric-covered metal bracelets. Soon, slap bracelets were labelled a menace and outlawed in school. But there was always that one kid. The one who never had any slap bracelets. You felt sorry for this kid but never gave him any of your slap bracelets. Then one day slap bracelets got boring, and went “out of style.” The next day that kid who didn’t have any slap bracelets comes waltzing into class with both forearms full up to the elbows with slap bracelets. And you felt even more sorry for him.

Doug had it all didn’t he? He had a kickass neighbor, a hot babe in Patty Mayonnaise, a beatnik sister, a dog named porkchop, and a blue friend named Skeeter. Not that there’s anything wrong with blue people, I know a lotta blue people and they are all nice people. A little loud at times, but good people nonetheless. (And, like they say, “once you go blue, you never…. go… through… it again?”) Doug also had the honor of being the first Nicktoon ever! Needless to say Nickelodeon got it right on the first try. Doug is by far my favorite nicktoon ever. Doug & Skeeter kicked the asses of Ren & Stimpy, Tommy & Chucky, Rocko & Heffer, Ickis & Krumm, and all other Nicktoons buddy pairings. Doug was not without his epic fails however. The Disney/ABC version of Doug ruined the show. Doug was happy at Nickelodeon, thanks alot mouse. All-in-all, Doug was a big part of 90′s kids’ viewing schedule, and who needed Indiana Jones when you hade Race Canyon? Anyone who didn’t watch this show lived in fear of Quialman’s Quaileye!

While the goosebumps series didn’t have the same user interaction that the Choose Your Own Adventure series did, it still took ya on a spooky tale, ya know, when you’re 11. The Goosebumps series lasted for 62 books, full of really scary monsters like Slappy the Dummy, Cuddles the Hamster, Curly the Skeleton, and a pair of evil lawn gnomes. It also spawned a few spin-off series also written by author R.L. Stine. Spin-offs like “Give yourself Goosebumps,” and “Goosebumps: 2000″ which weren’t before in the year 2000, but back in the 90′s it was cool to add 2000 after something. But when it got to be the year 2000 it was kinda over rated… I guess that would mean adding “2010″ after the name of something would be cool now. Anyway, unless you couldn’t read, or you were part of some weird cult that thought books were the devil, no kid from the 90′s made it through the decade without at least reading the back of a Goosebumps book. And what was the first thing you did when you picked up a Goosebumps book? You ran your fingers over the embossed “Goosebumps.” It’s not braille dude.

With hundreds of toys, 3 comic books series, a daily comic strip, 18 video games, 4 movies, 3 cartoon series, and over 20 years of existence (I guess they wouldn’t be teenagers anymore huh?) the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are far more than just Nostalgic. In the mid/late 1990s the Turtles were left without a TV show, a less than loved movie sequel, and a dwindling action figure line. The late 90′s almost killed the Ninja Turtles forever (Much to the enjoyment of Shredder). Somehow the Turtles evolved to become icons to a new generation while their original fans were getting too old to enjoy the heroes and their half-shells. From their debut in a dark, adult oriented comic book, to their kid friendly cartoons, and their movies which had amazing costume work for their time, the Ninja Turtles changed the face of Entertainment by lasting so long and renewing themselves to be appealing to many people from different generations.

Kids hated learning during non-school hours. They tried making ya learn during cartoons and other kids shows all the time, thats why most of those shows got cancelled. But from 1993 – 1997 Bill Nye the Science Guy made learning fun. Or at least made it fun to see if he was gonna blow himself up in some kind of experiment. He never did, but it was still a great show. BNTSG lasted 100 episodes, which for that time was pretty good for a 4 year show. BNTSG spawned plenty of wannabes, most notable was Beakman’s World. Nye, however, had a creepy Mr. Rogers thing going on, he seemed to like science a bit too much. But nonetheless, as Nye would say, “Science Rules!” Or it did for 30 minutes a day.
